Forty researchers from the Institute’s EAST research network met for a workshop at the University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Gorlitz (Germany), June 11-13, 2015 to present research on the depopulation of rural areas across Central and Eastern Europe. A range of interesting papers were presented and discussed, on topics as varied as Regional depopulation and the provision of institutional childcare in Germany and Poland; Shrinking Resources or Inexhaustible Reserves of Rural Labour Markets in Poland; Typology of rural settlements as a platform for depopulation process mitigation in Serbia; Role of Formal Services in Providing Care for Older People in Depopulating Rural Areas in Central/Eastern Europe and Is land ownership exacerbating rural depopulation? A select review of policy responses in Central and Eastern Europe.
